Espresso

1 minute1 servingBy FREDDO ·

To make an espresso you need 1 minute and 7 to 9 g of finely ground FREDDO Espresso, which give about 30 ml in 25 to 30 seconds. Fill the ground coffee into the portafilter, level it and tamp it firmly and evenly. Then lock the portafilter into the machine and start the shot straight away, so the coffee does not burn on the hot group head. If the espresso runs clearly faster than 25 seconds, the grind is too coarse and you set the grinder finer. If it takes longer than 30 seconds, grind a little coarser. A warmed cup keeps it hot for longer. Serve it right away while the crema is thick. For a double espresso, the base of freddo espresso, cappuccino and americano, use 18 g of coffee. With a bean-to-cup machine you simply press the espresso button, and the machine grinds the whole beans itself.

Tips and variations

What is an espresso?

An espresso is a small, strong coffee. Hot water is pressed through finely ground coffee under high pressure, giving about 30 ml with a hazelnut-brown crema in 25 to 30 seconds. It is the base for cappuccino, americano, latte macchiato and freddo espresso.

How fine should I grind for espresso?

Fine enough that about 30 ml runs through in 25 to 30 seconds. If the espresso runs faster, grind finer; if it takes longer, grind coarser. Aim for a thick, hazelnut-brown crema.

What is a double espresso?

A double espresso, doppio in Italian, is pulled from twice the amount of coffee: 18 g for about 60 ml in our recipes. It is the base for freddo espresso, freddo cappuccino, cappuccino and americano.

How much caffeine is in an espresso?

According to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), a 60 ml espresso contains about 80 mg of caffeine. EFSA considers up to 200 mg at a time and up to 400 mg a day safe for healthy adults; lower limits apply in pregnancy. Source: EUFIC on the EFSA opinion

What is an espresso macchiato?

An espresso macchiato is an espresso topped with a spoonful of milk foam; macchiato is Italian for marked. Pull an espresso and add one or two teaspoons of frothed milk.

What is a caffè crema?

A caffè crema is a long coffee from the espresso machine: more water, usually 120 to 150 ml, runs through slightly coarser coffee. It tastes milder than an espresso; many bean-to-cup machines have a button for it. A long black is made like our americano: hot water first, then a double espresso on top.
